I worked at a Taco Bell franchise when I was in high school. I don't really care for their food. There are so many other better fast food mexican places.

But most fast food places hire kids. I have a friend who owns 7 Wendy's on the east coast and all of them are spotless. (All are gold mines by the way.)

I've gone in to two in my life and both were disgusting. They had the problem last year with people getting sick and now look at this.

Their upper management sucks!

Yeah, That was the lead story on NewsRadio88 as I was driving into work tonight.
From here on out, given the option of going really hungry or Taco Smell, my choice will be hunger.

And if anybody eats there from here on out, on their own free will, deserves what's coming to them.

Any time I go into a fastfood or regular restaurant, I much prefer to see hispanics working in the kitchen. On average they work and prepare food better than your average white/other ethnic group worker.

Some rats with that?

Nauseated New Yorkers recoil
at Taco Bell/KFC rodent party

BY VERONIKA BELENKAYA, XANA O’NEILL and DON SINGLETON
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

It's swing time for Village rat pack.

Former worker Marcus Bonner said some were 'this big!'

The rats took over W. Fourth St. Taco Bell/KFC early yesterday. And they didn't care who was watching.

It was enough to make you choke on your chalupa.
To the disgust of millions who watched on TV or in person, a gang of brazen rats took over a Taco Bell/KFC restaurant in Greenwich Village yesterday - scampering across tables like they owned the joint.

The vermin slid down the backs of chairs, left trails of droppings on the floor and glared at passersby through the window until health inspectors shut down the eatery on Sixth Ave. near W. Fourth St.

"I just ate there last night - I think I'm going to be sick," said Earl Heffintrayer, 29. "I'll never come back here again."

The invasion began a little after midnight, while the restaurant was closed, creating a public relations nightmare for Taco Bell just two months after an E.Coli outbreak at the chain.

Photographers and TV crews descended on the scene - and it almost seemed like the 20-odd rodents were playing to the crowd.

At one point, as a Daily News reporter pressed close to the window, a rat hopped over, stood on its hind legs, put its paws against the glass and stared back.

"He's coming for his close-up," a spectator quipped.

The stomach-churning images were soon flashed across the nation on the Internet and TV news shows, leaving Americans a little queasy over breakfast.

Those familiar with the location said the rat pack was not a surprise.

"It's the dirtiest place in the neighborhood," said Joel Cohen, whose apartment overlooks the restaurant. "It's a blight."

Marcus Bonner, 19, who had just finished his night shift at the McDonald's across the street, said he had been fired by Taco Bell because he complained about sanitary conditions at the eatery.

"There's a hole in the wall behind the grill," he said. "The rats come through the back of the building where the trash is kept."

By 10:30 a.m., a city Health Department inspector had arrived and quickly taped two yellow "Closed" notices on the windows.

The operator of the franchise, ADF Fifth Operating Corp., did not return calls, but the parent company was quick to respond.

"This is an isolated incident at a single restaurant ... and it is totally unacceptable," Taco Bell said in a statement. "The restaurant is closed and we will not allow it to be reopened until it has been sanitized and given a complete clean bill of health."

The company blamed "construction in the basement" of the two-story building.

The location was cited for a rat infestation Dec. 11 and the problem was remedied, said Mayor Bloomberg's spokesman Stu Loeser, who added that most city restaurants face health code violations at some point, correct them and reopen.

The number of rodent complaints has just about doubled since Mayor Bloomberg took office in 2002, climbing to 32,200 in the fiscal year ending June30. But a report this month showed a drop of 13% from last year.

The Village franchise is likely to be closed for days, but the fallout could linger longer.

Taco Bell has barely recovered from last year's E. Coli disaster, which was blamed on lettuce and made 70 people ill.

And it seems like investors lost their appetite a little. On a down day on the market, stock for Yum Brands Inc., which owns Taco Bell, fell 55 cents to $60.51.

Taco Bell

It’s easy to pile up on the food when you head to a fast food restaurant. Sometimes your eyes can take on more than your stomach can handle, coupled with the cheap prices keeping your wallet or purse from going empty. Toss in a few drinks beforehand and who knows what might happen. It’s very easy to end up with a pile of food that an animal could have trouble eating.
Enter Chuck Carroll over at The Weight Loss Champion and his tale about his normal haul at Taco Bell. He’s obviously battled his eating habits over the years and lost a ton of weight — 265 pounds according to his column — but his old days used to feature a much different view. It was one visit in particular that forced Carroll to look at his diet and how it was affecting his life:
“You eat too much,” a garbled woman’s voice coming from the speaker said.
I could feel my heart both sink and leap into my throat at the same time.
Thinking that I may have misunderstood the often distorted audio from the speaker box I replied, “what?” My fingers were crossed as I hoped for a difference response.
“You eat too much,” she again said; this time more clearly.
I had been fat shamed by a Taco Bell employee.
He then goes on to talk a bit about his feelings, the excuses that followed, the looks from the staff at the drive thru window, and the weight of the contents in the bag. After setting the scene, Carroll finally goes down the list of his order:
My Standard Taco Bell Order
2 7-Layer Burritos
860 calories
32 grams of fat
2,030mg of sodium
2 Beef Grilled Stuffed Burritos
1,440 calories
64 grams of fat
4,280mg of sodium
Nachos Bell Grande
760 calories
38 grams of fat
1,300mg of sodium
Chicken Quesadilla
510 calories
27 grams of fat
1,200mg of sodium
Cheesy Potato Burrito
490 calories
22 grams of fat
1,300mg of sodium
Carmel Apple Empanada
310 calories
15 grams of fat
310mg of sodium
Total
4,370 calories
196 grams of fat
10,420mg of sodium
After reading that, I would say that the claims of “fat shaming” are questionable just based on the order alone. Five burritos is likely the definition of eating too much, big or small. But either way, the situation ended up being a wake up call — even if it was sadly a bit cruel and shameful for Carroll.
He notes that had he been any other age at the time, he likely would’ve died while keeping up with that diet. Moments like this and a sobering reality shared by his father helped Carroll decide to get gastric bypass surgery and change his lifestyle. Now he’s a few years over 30 and living like a new man.
If this reminds you of your lowest point, Carroll should prove that it is possible to turn it around.
